How to do it
- Stand tall, dumbbells in front of your thighs, soft knees.
- Push your hips straight back — the weights slide down your legs.
- Keep your back flat and the dumbbells close the whole way.
- Stop when your hamstrings pull tight, around mid-shin.
- Drive your hips forward to stand, squeezing your glutes at the top.
Common mistakes
- Bending the knees into a squat. Once the knees travel forward the hamstrings slacken and the hinge is gone.
- Rounding the lower back. Reaching for depth with a curled spine hands the hamstrings' load to the discs.
- Rushing the descent. The controlled stretch on the way down is the entire point — dive-bombing it removes the stimulus.
